Rights Respecting Schools Award

"The Rights Respecting Schools Award is a Unicef UK programme that aims to put children’s rights at the heart of schools in the UK. We work with thousands of schools across the country to embed children’s rights in their ethos and culture to improve well-being and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential." Unicef, UK

In the 2015/16 school year, our school set out on a journey towards being 'Rights Respecting'.

We began by choosing a small group of children and adults to form a 'steering group'. This small team of representatives, from all parts or our school community, worked together to create an action plan showing how we would work towards Right Respecting School status. This allowed us to achieve our 'Recognition of Commitment' award.

We are now working towards level 1 of the Rights Respecting School Award (RRSA). This involves teaching everyone in our school community about children's rights as set out in the United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

The children will be learning about their rights in assembly and in their classrooms. By January 2017, each classroom will have a Rights Respecting Charter in place. These will show the rights that the children think are most significant for their classroom and how children and adults can ensure these rights are realised.

Parents will be kept up to date on our RRSA work through a monthly newsletter, which will be produced by the children in our steering group.
